Those big Firebirds that are on the Trans Am are not clearcoated from the factory. They are applied after the car is painted. If you want to clear over your decal you should paint the car first then after it is fully cured wet sand the entire panel that the transfer will be applied to with 1000 grit sand paper,apply the transfer,and then clear the entire panel. The paint must be fully cured before you apply the transfer or you risk the possibility of bubbles forming under the transfer from solvent evaporation.

But wait, there's more! From doing this stuff in my sign shop, there are tricks of the trade. First follow the above suggestions.
a) When you get your vinyl decal, make sure it is covered in release film. (Giant masking tape that isn't too sticky)
b) With real masking tape, get the decal exactly where you want it. When you get it there, make a living hinge out of tape. (A straight piece of tape across the top, bottom, or side) Remove the rest of the tape holding the decal in place.
c) Hinge the decal back. It will have a paper backing. If the decal is large, peel the paper off the first 6 inches of the decal. (Sometimes a second set of hands helps) As you hinge the decal adhesive side on to the substrate (car), use a squeegee and work your way from the top down to insure no air bubbles. Continue this process as you go until the entire decal is in place. When finished, remove the release film. If you have bubbles, use a new exacto tip or a pin and work the air out.

If you have a small decal or a series of decals that you want to align together, spray some Windex (Yes, real Windex, not Joe's window cleaner) to the area first, peel of the backing and put it on. It will NOT stick at first. You an slide it around like a 17 yr old with KY jelly (Sorry)
When you have it where you want it, (Decal, not the 17 yr old) GENTLY squeegee the Windex from behind it by going over the decal. You don't want to scatch it. Also, the squeegee should be firm rubber on a sign shop squeegee, not a bondo spreader. They are hard plastic and WILL scratch the decal.
