Coated vs uncoated headers

I am about ready to put my big block into my 79 El Camino and am having headers made to fit the tall deck engine (572cid). This car will be driven less than 100 miles per year and is just for fun. The question is whether coating the headers is worth the $ considering the low mileage and the fact that they will be wrapped anyway. Also how does the coating affect the rate at which the metal corrodes on the inside?

Wrapping headers........kills the metal, it shortens the life.....by a bunch....by holding the heat in the metal.

Coating them does what wrapping tries to do. It keeps the heat in the tube....not necessarily in the metal.......

I saw a 30 degree drop in under hood temperatures when I had my exhaust coated.

They ALSO look so much better.

I have ceramic coated headers on my white caprice. It's definitely money well spent. Don't get to use to that shiny coating though, my coating has turned a dull grey. I guess I run my car kind of hard, but I'll take dull grey over rust any day.

And Deuce is right about lower temperatures, I believe the coating cuts the headers outside temperature almost in half.

Go with the JetHot and stay away from the "wrap"... Make sure you go with a coater that does the inside of the tube also. Like everyone is saying it is money well spent, under hood temps are cut dramatically and the headers will last forever...

I had mine coated by a outside vendor........

There are 3 or 4 places close to Charlotte NC that are coating exhaust now ( Nascar stuff ). Mine is still fairly shiny after a couple years. Mine were coated inside and out.

Proper air/fuel air mixture also helps keep the exhaust coating last better. Too lean is very hot and can damage it.

Every car I do from now on will have coated exhaust.

Does that apply to the exhaust pipes as well? I really like to wrap the pipes where they come in close proximity of sensitive items and the floorboards.
It is OK to wrap the exhaust pipe where it is in close proximity to things like fuel lines and master cylinder. For floor board protection I would insulate the floor board rather than wraping the exhaust pie.

YES.....the wrap will shorten tail pipe life also. Not as fast as header pipes ( the heat)........so I have stainless exhaust pipe.

I use a wrap for the wiring and fuel lines......it is DEI.

Summit sells it.....
