It's been a while but lets see if I remember...R stands for resistor to cut out radio interference, the number designation such as 42, 43 ,44 and 45 stands for heat range, TS stands for tapered seat so that the spark plug seals properly and the gap difference if because the plugs where meant for different engines that required different gaps...possibly for piston clearance.
I hope this explains...pretty sure I got right, if I'm wrong, I'm sure someone else will chime in and correct me.
