early c4 rebuild, rubber check valve?

Hi, I'm rebuilding an early C-4, green dot, 24 spline, transmission that will be going behind a 170 engine in my old 65 falcon. Last night I was rebuilding the valve body and could not find the check valve balls that the Haynes manual specifies are there. All I found was a small rubber disc (about 1/8" diameter by 1/16" thick) that is used as a check valve. I referenced the 1965 factory manual and it only shows this rubber disc and no check valve balls. Can someone confirm this is correct for the early C-4's? Thanks!

Thanks for the info. The rebuild kit I have does have 3 check balls with it. Unfortunately (for me...) the diagram of the lower and upper valve body that is in the Haynes manual does not match the valve body I have so I can't tell where to put the check balls, the channels are too different. I'm thinking they are using a diagram for a later, non-green dot, valve body. The diagram in the Factory manual matches the valve body I have but does not show any check balls at all. Is there any way I can tell from just looking at the valve body where the check balls go? Thanks again, Paul

You should buy a better C4 manual! You're definitely going to want specifics in diagram especially. When we rebuild trannies before we pull them we put a small punch next to the check ball locations so we can remember them (and pump meeting location so that it will always be perfect). I rebuilt my early C4 for my 200-6 in my '65 Mustang, and I think I can get you the information tomorrow from my boss if you'd like.

Every trans we build at our shop gets a shift kit, you should get one to! We use transco and they are excellant, they specify where the balls and pucks go and leave some out or drill holes or whatever.

A shift kit isn't just for "performance" we install one in every trans in every type of vehicle, they clean up the shifts very nicely and i believe make the transmissions last longer

Early, "green dot" valve bodies are not part of the shift kit family. Sorry.
I do have info about the green dot valve body, but you must wait for me to access the manuals at my shop. Several green dot variatons exist and identifying the valve body correctly will be important.
Pray that my scanner works!!!

No shift kits? Uh-OH! I bought a Transgo kit and the separator plate it pictured in the directions matched the one I have. It sure seemed like the kit was written specifically for the valve body I have. The kit was simple, just put a small "plunger" into on of the holes on the pump housing, enlarge a hole on the separator plate, and change out 4 springs in the valve body. They also give a couple of torque spec for the bands. Well, if it dont work I'll know to pull the valve body! :drunk:
