Hello - I am trying to install a VSS in my 80 Volvo which has a 97 S10 4.3 in it. The car has a 700r4 in it and when the conversion was done a VSS was never installed. I am now adding one, but it takes a special one because the speedometer is cable driven, but the VSS is used in the place where the speedo gear housing is - they made a dual-output VSS for 91-93 caprice and camaros... that has a VSS output as well as a cable drive output for the cable driven speedos. However, the wiring connector I bought for this purpose has yellow and purple wires.

The wiring harness I bought from the pick n pull salvage yard has green/black and purple/black wires on it. The connector is different so I will need to change the connector. I would assume that the purple wire on the new connector pigtail would go to the purple/black wire on the harness, and that the yellow wire on the pigtail would go to the green/black wire on the harness. But you know what they say about assumptions... :D:D

So i figured id ask someone here first before I really mess something up... better safe than sorry....

It may not matter. I'd test it with a drill motor and VOM. Just clip the wires together, spin the cable with the drill and see if you get anything. Not sure what scale you'll need to check for pulses...

Thanks guys, I think youre probably right on all the above. I attached a pic of this VSS, just for the heck of it... its pretty rare im told, my local transmission place had never seen one before... There is a gear that goes on that stub on the end.... and a cable driven speedo cable screws onto the other end... and then of course it also has the connector at the top for the VSS output.... (4000 Pulse Per Mile, btw)

Edit - Added pic of the speedo gear too...

Ok. I have everything installed, and the computer is no longer throwing a code for the VSS, however I am not sure that its really working right. I have this cable that connects my laptop to the OBD2 diagnostic connector, and allows me to use software on the laptop to read/clear codes, as well as seeing live data from the ECM and a bunch of other stuff. However, the speedometer on the "dashboard" of the OBD2 software reports that I am going only 1 mph. And it doesn't even read that until you're going about 40mph... If it isnt reading the correct speed, then i might as well not even have the VSS....can anyone think of why this would only read 1mph at the most?? The same usb-to-obd2 adapter and same laptop reads the vehicle speed correctly on other vehicles I have used it on, so it has to be something to do with this vehicle... If the VSS can be wired backwards, is it possible that that could be the problem?
