Spray gun cleaning.
I currently own DeVilbiss, SATA, and Iwata gravity fed guns, (Along with a couple Graco pump style set ups mated to conversion guns, and two Kremlin air mix set ups.) I have sprayed with just about every type of gun and finish. The cleaning procedure is about the same for all of them.
This is the key, buy a gun cleaning kit first off. This is just a kit of different sized brushes and some lubricant. Once you have finished spraying. Clean out any unused material and properly dispose of it if it is catalyzed. Remove the cup from the gun, and wash it thoroughly with a good cleaning thinner or acetone, making sure you clean around the cap. (I hate it when someone lazy leaves a build up around the cap and you get crap falling into your finish as it flakes off.) Remove the air cap and put it into a small container of thinner. Remove the fluid nozzle and place it in the container. Remove the spray needle and put it in the same container. Placing the fluid chamber in the thinner scrub it lightly with your brushes until you have removed all of the finish residue. Remove the residue from the other components and re-assemble. The spray needle will need to be lubricated where it slides against the spring in the rear assembly, and where it contacts the inlet of the fluid chamber. (This is key on an Iwata since the fluid needle will not slide smoothly and can stick wide open when you don't want it to.) Do not immerse the entire gun in thinner. That will Kill a DeVilbiss quick. (Most guns in fact.) Once you are clean and reassembled, set it aside until next time.
