Installing bellhousing dowel pins (sbc)

Simple question... how do you know when they're in far enough? I had a quick look down the hole before tapping them in and couldn't really see a positive stop for the pins.

There's no rule for the depth, just put them in far enough that the protruding end is enough to get a good fit the bellhousing alignment holes, leave approximately the thickness of the bellhousing exposed.

They can be had in different diameters, from .0621 to .0625 for a tight fit. Extra long are available, up to like 1.5 inches.

Although i've never done it,(changed the dowel pin's to longer) I've been told that the longer one's make the installation easier. ;)

what i do to make installation of a trans. easier (along this same way of thinking)
i take a couple of long bolts and cut the head off and bevel the end and then I grind a groove into the end, (for screwdriver removal)
now you have a couple of alignment pins to get the trans. started with
