That looks very nice. If it was mine, I would cover the whole thing with 1/4" closed cell foam (brand name Volara) and then cover that with the fabric of your choice. The fabric (and foam) would need to be tailored and cut and sewn to fit. It could have french seams or top stitched seams which would really look great. If I get a chance today, I'll fabricate something and post a picture.

 

Go to your local fabric shop and get vinyl material that will go on with a good spray on adhesive. I would be careful where you do put padding as well, cause if you pad something that has a close fit when you put it back , it may be too thick.

 

Depending on the look you're trying to achieve, tweed may be an acceptable option.

FWIW, most people consider tweed to be a bit old fashioned and dated. That is a nice looking console and will look very good covered in upholstery material. Another alternative is to use it as a buck to make a fiberglass replica of it. Then the fiberglass replica could be smoothed out as required and painted to match either the interior of the car or for color contrast the exterior color.

Tweed is out. And the all fiberglass painted wouldnt match the theme of the car.

I was thinking stretching some faux leather over the whole thing. The sewn look sounds ok too. Gotta see what shops we got around here. I live in BFE mississippi so its hard to find quality shops of any kind. Im not in a hurry so sometime after christmas ill go talk to some shops. I think we got a couple around here.

I was thinking of coating it like my dash. Thats rubberizd undercoating with a top coat of Black Effex by duplicolor. It actually worked real well. But im afraid ill be rubbing my leg against it enough that I may wear through eventually. Thinking the material streatched would hold up better.

 

O.K., I had some time to show you what I was talking about. We are going to upholster a "console". Please remember that this is just to show you the steps, not the quality of my work. A real live console would be much easier and come out looking much better. Here is the console. O.K., I know it's just a cardboard box, but it will do. The first thing to do is cover the console with 1/4" closed cell foam. I can glue this on with foam to foam glue because the fabric (in this case some white 100% polyester fabric like Ultraleather) will be stapled down underneath the bottom of the console. I start with a long piece over the ends and long part of the top. Then I cut a piece for each side and glue it on making the joints as smooth as possible. They don't have to be perfect because the fabric joints will cover up minor imperfections. Then I cut the fabric making sure I make it long enough to have some extra fabric to pull with, and sew each side on as in the picture. Then I top stitch the seams. ( I used black thread just so it would be easier to see) In this case, one side is a french seam stitched on both sides of the original seam, and the other side is just top stitched through both layers of fabric. (This side doesn't look as good as the other side because I did not pad this side with foam.) Then I just staple the fabric down under the bottom of the "console". That's all there is to it, and even though it's just a cardboard box, it didn't turn out too bad, at least on one side. Your console is a little more elaborate, but the basic steps are the same.

 

Thank you for showing me that. I like the double french stitch look. Gives me an idea of what to ask for when I go talk to the guys.

nice, and and it's wide enough that you could hide an 8 or 10"sub and amp under it.. or a pair of 5.25"
