Glasspack

Ight guys i was a ******* and welded the glasspack on before i soaked it in gas and all that good stuff. Is there any way to make them louder when they are already on the truck?? Ive already tried the water hose thing and it didnt work that well..Any suggestions??

damn sseal15...ur in a ****hole man. sry to hear the bad news. is there a lot gained/lost by welding glasspacks on? or will a exhaust pipe clamp do the same job? i know a guy who has a 67 camaro 454...glasspacks. he said that he cut the pack off just before it reduced back to the 2.5" coming out...he said that he ripped out the guts...welded back together...and painted. i know its a lot of work but he said its gotten him out of a couple tickets. it acts like open pipes but looks like glasspacks. im thinking about doin the whole burn the fiberglass out...should i use diesel or gasoline? and ive heard that if u have glasspacks, continue the piping to the back. then put certain exhaust tips on it, it will pop more upon acceleration...is this true??

the thing about blowing the packing out of glasspacks with water is you have to get the glass packs very hot, by either running the engine for about 10 mins or by heating them with a torch evenly throughout, whats happens the fiber glass shatters when it is suddenly cooled down by the water you shoved into the pipes, you can do this several times to make sure it shattered completly, then you will have a glass pack that is basicly nothing other than an echo chamber

To do it right, cap off one end. Fill glasspack with diesel fuel and let soak. Dump fuel after say 3-4 hours (in an environmentally safe way, like in your gas tank through a filter) and set them on fire. When the fire goes out all the packing is gone and the hideousness will begin. Just be careful and if anything goes wrong its your fault not mine. Be prepared for smoke.

Sorry boy's but I'm with Poncho, don't like loud anymore, never really did. And if you think you can cut your glasspacks apart to remove the packing, then weld them back together so a Police Officer can see that you have mufflers????? Do you really think he's going to get down under your car in his uniform to check?? He does'nt care if you have mufflers on it or not, he stopped you because its TOO loud, you get an equipment violation then you have to get it legal and have it inspected, ......waste of money.

If they have a baffle in them, beat it out with a broomstick and hammer. If they are the louvered kind, turn the muffler so that the louver openings face the rear of the vehicle.

I'm running the first and probably the last set of glasspacks on my Nova. There are times I don't want to be loud, like in front of a cop.
Although I got into a noise competition with a Honda yesterday. He gave me a thumbs up.

I've had good service for header gaskets by using stock style metal/fibre composition gaskets and copper hi-temp RTV. Run a bead around the weldbead sealing surface of the header, let it set up for 10-15 minutes, install the gaskets against the block, install the headers. Evenly tighten them from inside to ends back and forth.
I also use this method on the collector gasket flanges where the pipes hook up.
Never had a leak problem using this technique at the block or collector.

Old Cherry bomb glasspack vs. New Cherry Bomb

ya guys so i have an 88 f150, with a glasspack on it.. Its kinda quiet, so im thinkin about cutting it off and clamping one of the NEW cherrybomb mufflers, rather than the OLD cherrybomb glasspack mufflers.. Any reomendations, casue i really want it to be loud!!

What we used to do back in the 60's was run the car untill the muffler is good and hot...then shut it off and run a water hose up the tail pipe......It will make some of the glass turn loose and will make it louder.

A way that works to make glasspacks louder

In my experience I have noticed it is hard to burn out cherrybomb glass packs, try a thrush glasspack. You can use cheap or even recycle old motor oil to do what i am going to say. Dump about half a quart in each. Then roll them in the front yard, this evenly distributes the oil in the packing. Wait an hour to let it soak in. Install with tail pipe exiting over the rear axle on trucks or mid body on cars 88 and before or at the end 88 and after. Heres what tho do next. Start vehicle and rev :nono: I mean REVVVVV! :evil: while at high RPM shut off engine this leaves raw fuel in cylinders. Start again after 30 seconds. REVVV! engine put vehicle in drive or overdrive and stomp gas pedal on the road. In less than 1 hr the vehicle takes on it's own sweet sound. and on 85 and older trucks do the same but with a twist; While on country road or hwy go 55 mph drop in neutral and shut engine off. If you have a carburetor on the vehicle this is impressive! pump the gass 7-8 times and star up again drop in gear and floor it. Fire ball meets oil. The glass pack is HOLLOWin 15 min of hard driving. pretty cool huh :thumbup:

I had a 31" thrush magnum on my '51 Chevy, 235 6cyl. it was a nice mellow tone, quiet inside, nothing too loud outside, but you knew it was running. I have since removed the exhaust system and have not replaced. Longer= Quieter, there not always loud

I know with turbo mufflers you can load em up with motor oil and take um down the road and the packing will blow out.
But don't get pulled over cause the "Excessive smoke" ticket has hefty fine.

My dad has a 57 belair 2 dr hardtop with SBC hooker headers on his 283 that go straight to glasspacks bolted to the collector. His cars been that way for 30 some years and its not horribly loud, it has that same open header sound and rap when you let off but its like someone took a tv remote and turned down the volume.

Glass packs

I got popped for running straight pipes on my small block powered '62 Chevy half ton once,and the cop told me,"I'm gonna pull you over again in a couple of days,and if you don't have mufflers on that thing,I'm pulling the plates off it." So I got a set of glass packs for 2-1/8" pipes,cut my 2" pipes to slide clear through 'em,clamped the front ends and made the joints on the pipes right under the rear clamps,just an eighth of an inch or so in from the ends. Hey-he never said they had to be functional....

I dont like loud anymore, have 12 inch glass packs on my trans am, exits in front of the rear end. Its LOUD. Doesnt pop or rattle like glasspacks usually do though, just smooooth. Looking into cherry bomb's chambered muffler, or into magnaflows next...need it to quiet down, has too nice of a stereo in it for the engine to drown it out!

Glass packs

My '76 big block duallie has Magna Flows,and I REALLY like the sound of 'em. Strong sounding but not overly loud under a hard pull. (Makes me drive with the window down even on cold days. ) I AM going to a louder exhaust on my '45 Mack though,(not Diesel,354 gas six) I ran it with no muffler and a 4 inch stack driving it home from Reno,and around here for a while,but my conscience got to me,waking people up when driving home late at night,so I put the stock under-cab muffler back on. Now I can't hear it at anything over 30 mph,and under that I can still hear the valves working. I think a 4" in-4" out glass pack about 2 feet long will do the trick. (Still working on how to set up a flame thrower in the stack and hide the wiring and such. :evil: )
