I know you guys get this alot most likely but I need to know what manual transmission to use in a 94 s10. what are all the components will i need for the swap? the transmission in it now is already a manual. trying to go the cheapest route possible. The motor puts out 430hp so i'll probably drive it like it should be lol. Thanks for the help.

I guess that would depend on what you have now really. My buddy had and S10 350 V8 with a 4 speed Muncie. I had an S10 that was originally the 4.3 and a 5 speed T-5 Trans. The T-5 isn't the strongest trans in those however it will bolt up and work. If the trans doesn't feel good they made a T-5 World class which is considerably stronger and people throw those behind V8's all the time. You don't need much to do this swap and there are tons of parts available for it. I believe the only trans that would directly bolt up would be the one behind the 4.3 V6.

rear gear x 1st gear should = 9 or more
M21 & M22 are both 2.20/1.64/1.27/1.00
M20s are 2.52/1.88/1.46/1.00

Go with the M20 and an axle 3.55 or numerically higher. There is an asian made M22W that has the same ratios as the M20, but on the rock crusher platform.

Don't take anyones word as gospel, put the thing in first gear and turn the output shaft 10 times, the input needs to turn 25 times to be an M20. (25/10 = 2.5) No you cant just turn the OUTput once and judge the difference between 2.20 and 2.5 accurately.

If you want to put a little money into an M20, get a 1" countershaft trans to begin with and change the 10 spline input to a 26 spline M20 input.

Dont even consider a 7/8" countershaft Muncie with 400+hp in a truck.

Most folks around here do the S10 V8 swap and keep the T-5 in it. They never have problems with them. Just cause they're only rated to hold 300ft. lbs. doesnt mean they will grenade at that rating. I have pushed every trans i've ever owned WAY beyond its rating. If it's a budget build and the trans is good just use it.

My daily commuter is a 1999 cavalier with the stock 5 speed Isuzu transmission that everyone says is junk) behind a 2004 Malibu 3.5 V-6 with a 100 shot of nitrous with drag radials. I'm well over 250 ft. lbs. over the rating of this transmission. I have dragged it a dozen times or so this year as well.

I owned a 94 cavalier same thing Turbocharged 50K worth of ABUSE never had a problem.

1994 Camaro LQ4 Swapped 150 shot of nitrous on a stock T56 Trans. Never had an issue.

2005 GTO Twin Turbo Stock Trans 620 Ft. Lbs. TQ. No problems.

The list goes on and on. I drive VERY hard and don't have issues.

There are plenty of guys in Australia who would pay a princely sum for the input and cluster out of your GTO. I get calls at least once a week, since parts are almost impossible to find

Stock S10 T5 are absolutely delicate little things, considering it doesnt even have the V8 camaro guts (2.95 1st gear).

The OP can do what he likes, at least get a V8 T5, or go with a 4spd, either an M20 or a Borg/Warner ST10 with a 2.64 or 2.88 gearset. IF you get a 2.88, make sure you get one with a 1.90 2ND T10CC not the 1.75 2ND T10Y ratio
