SBC Filter Oil Flow Direction

After many trouble free years of running an oil cooler on my 3rd gen Camaro I´m having problems with the new adapter regarding oil flow at the filter.

I reckon, the oil leaves the pump and goes into the middle of the filter,
the threaded hole, it then passes through the filter and goes out the top outside holes.
I removed my oil lines at the thermostat and cranked the motor to see which
line the pressure side was, the result with my new adapter was´nt what I expected, the reverse of my original.

I´ve looked for oil flow diagrams but could´nt find anything useful.
Anyone know the flow ?

That´s how I had it setup, as in pic below, but as I said removing the lines and cranking,
the return arrow showing return from cooler at threaded port was to cooler
That´s where the oil spurted from.

The brainbasher I´m trying to solve is the cooler is not "working",
instead of temp gauge showing 180º as it used to, it shows 215º, and after a two hour drive the cooler was............cold.
(B/M stacked plate cooler not tubes and fins.)

Last night I was reading a bedtime story..............Summit catalog, when I passed the page on oil pumps and associated kit.

There was my adapter TRD-1313...........FOR CHRYSLER; FORD.

The adapter above it TRD-1322 is the Chevy one.

I have no idea if this could be causing the oil flow problem or even how I came to have ordered it, and how on earth did it bolt up no problem with different thread sizes ? :smash: :smash:

That or the relief valve's hung wide open

It doesnt seem it should make a huge difference which way the oil flows through the cooler. If the cooler was cold the oil is not getting to it. This is a little scary because if it is flowing through the filter it would have to go through the cooler unless a bypass is stuck or something else weird.
Even if it is the wrong adapter, you still need to wonder why it worked and then stopped. It would also be interesting to call the manufacturer and find out exactly what the difference is. It may not matter.

That´s true but the pressure line has to enter the thermostat on the right side, this is so the hot oil can activate it and open it up fully.
After that it´s the cooler and as you say flow does´nt matter there.

I think I got it, the thermostat is´nt opening.
Apparently the oil going into it gets routed back to the motor until it´s hot enough to open the thermostat and let the oil go through the cooler.
My oil certainly gets hot enough to do that.
Whatever the adapter is it works.
