I just got this motor and need to know for sure what size it is. The guy said it was a 350. The suffix code is XJA. I can't make out what the numbers are on the rear just the front. Here is the whole number off the front.....K0610XJA. Help needed and would be appreciated.

K is St Catherine plant in Canada, all I could find is XJ, no XJA...XJ was 1969 350 2 barrel carb from C-50 truck(grain truck/delivery truck). From this size truck it would be 4-bolt main and forged steel crank if it is all stock.

Looks like you need to get the casting # off the rear flange of the block, or open it up and check the stroke.

Bamaboy, how many times have I said on this forum....TRUST NOBODY.
You could have at least pulled a head to check the pistons and the bore size.

Copied this from a thread on ChevyTalk forum.....
"Generally suffix codes that start with an 'X' indicate a replacement engine from GM parts. A complete crate engine (less intake, distr, water pump) designed to be used in many applications and a range of years."

Hope you didn't pay good money for a 262.

Update.. number on back of block.....5.7, tells me its a 350....10263880...but the 4th digit is a little distorted so not sure if its a 4 or a 6. Almost 100% its a 6 though... now the sites I went on only showed it being a 4 bolt but it is a 2 bolt block.. ????.. will try to post a pic of it if I can figure out how.

Is there anyway to know which cam it has by looking at the cam?
Easier than that, pull either valve cover and loosen one rocker arm. Remove the pushrod and measure it. Flat tappet pushrods will be 7.800" to 8.150" (about 7 13/16" to 8 3/16") if measuring with a tape measure. Roller tappet pushrods will be 7.200" to 7.300" (about 7 3/16" to 7 5/16").

And how can I tell if its a vortec motor. And is there a significant difference between a reg 350 and the vortec? Sry for all the ?'s trying to learn.
'96-'02 L31 Vortec motors will have a 1-piece rear seal, roller tappet cam, tappet bores will be spot-faced to accept dog bones (tappet anti-twist devices), no provision on the camshaft for a mechanical fuel pump, different nose on the cam from a flat tappet cam, etc., etc.
