Why cant I check my oil on my Highlander ??

Ive decided to do my own oil changes...after the quick change place stripped the drain bolt.

When I pull the dipstick on the 2010 highlander v6, oil seems to smear everywhere, making it impossible to get a reading.
Even if I let it sit for hours to let the oil settle, the same thing happens. It looks way over full.
I drained everything, and filled it back with 6.4 quarts. Its the 3.5L V6. The owners manual said nothing about fluid capacity.
I looked it up on line and found multiple sources stating 6.4 quarts. 6.4 was the only capacity I found for that engine.
It looks way over full. I even painted the end satin black to try and see it better.
Its even harder to read with new oil. I drained a quart and a half out of it, and the dipstick looks exactly the same.

What the hell am I missing? Ive never had any issues reading a dipstick.

Looks like you're not the only one having the same issue. If it were me, I would take a small triangular file and put some crosshatch pattern on the dipstick then clean. Add the specified amount of oil to an empty pan, start engine, fill filter, shut off and let sit for an hour. Stick the dipstick in and check it and put a new full mark "small notches" on the side of the stick. Sounds like Toyota has the problem on a bunch of engines.

I tried first with some sand paper. I guess a file would have been better, but there is so much smeared oil, i'm not sure it would work. Im going to give it a try though.

I did drain everything, and added exactly 6.4. I was kinda worried I found an incorrect capacity.....but its the only number listed all over the place.
